Texas Hereford Queen & Sweetheart Rules

1. The Texas Junior Hereford
Association members, age 15-22, who have been members prior to February
1, 2008, are eligible to compete for Texas Hereford Queen.
2. The Texas Hereford Queen will be assisted by a Texas Hereford
Sweetheart, ages 11-14, which will be chosen in the same manner as the
Queen.
3. Queen/Sweetheart Candidates will be selected in the following manner:
a. Interview – 40 points, to be conducted at the state show with a
member of each, the Texas Hereford Association, the Texas Hereford
Auxiliary, and the Texas Junior Hereford Association to be the
interviewing board. Candidates will be awarded a maximum of 10 points
per category during the interview. The four categories will consist of
the following:
1. Texas Hereford activities, honors, and awards.
2. 4-H, FFA, school, church, and community activities.
3. Knowledge of Hereford cattle and the beef industry.
4. Poise, neatness and appearance, and written and oral communication
skills.
b. Election Process – 60 points, to be conducted at the state show by
secret ballot. Each current member of the Texas Hereford Association,
the Texas Hereford Auxiliary, and the Texas Junior Hereford Association
having one vote. Auxiliary members not having a candidate nominated will
supervise the voting booth. No mail outs, campaign or promotional
materials may be used to solicit votes prior to or during the contest.
4. Show Attendance: The Texas Hereford Queen and Sweetheart are required
to represent the Hereford industry at the following:
Fort Worth Auxiliary Annual Meeting
Fort Worth Commercial Heifer Sale and Open Show
Texas Junior Hereford State Show
Texas Hereford Royalty shall coordinate their itineraries in order for
at least one of the
ladies to be present at the Junior National Hereford Expo [Queen only],
the National
Western in Denver, the American Royal in Kansas City, the Sand Hills
Hereford Show
in Odessa, the Fort Worth Junior Heifer and Steer Shows in Fort Worth,
and the
Houston Junior Heifer and Steer Shows in Houston.
5. Dress for the Texas Hereford Royalty shall abide by the following
code:
Show Ring: Non-denim colored pants (Black and Khaki preferred), tailored
shirt, jacket/blazer, leather banner, hat and tiara. Short sleeved
tailored shirt with no jacket may be allowed during warmer seasons.
Any combined horned and polled show (Expo, Denver, Kansas City, etc.):
dress code will follow that set at the national level. Information for
dress at these functions may be obtained from the AHA National Queen
Coordinator.
Outside Functions: Western cut skirt, jacket, tiara and banner or other
appropriate attire for dressy functions can be worn with approval.
Absolutely NO spaghetti straps, tube tops, or off-the-shoulder style
tops allowed. Appropriate attire should be selected as the Royalty
represents the Hereford breed and themselves.
6. In keeping with the girl’s suggestions, she will be an ambassador for
the Hereford cattle and the beef industry, and should provide interviews
with the media at the major shows whenever they can be scheduled for
her.
7. The Queen and Sweetheart are required to send their itinerary to the
Texas Hereford Auxiliary 2nd Vice President by September 1. Expo plans
will be made at the field day with the Auxiliary Queen Committee. Any
changes to her plans must be made 10 days prior to the show. Final
approval of extenuating circumstances will be made by the Queen
Committee consisting of the 2nd Vice President and two other directors,
appointed by the President.
8. Failure to follow the contract rules the girl and her parents sign
may result in her forfeiting her title and all awards and monies
received for that title. In this instance the Sweetheart would assume
duties and role of the Queen. The Texas Hereford Queen will receive $400
and the Sweetheart $200, as well as additional prizes and awards, from
the Auxiliary.
